FAQ
The Answers You Need

How can VLS help me?

You will be assigned a Learning Strategist (LS) who will be your primary contact and support. The LS will identify your strengths and areas where support is needed and develop an action plan to help you reach your goals. This plan might include referral for evaluation for a learning disability (if appropriate), supports like trade-specific or academic tutoring, virtual meetings to provide study skill instruction, or targeted strategies for organization that are designed for your specific needs.

How much time do I have to spend doing this?

That depends on you and your goals. Once an action plan has been established, you might meet regularly with your LS for skills instruction, or you might only engage with the LS for occasional check-ins to see how the plan is progressing. Interactions with the LS are scheduled around your needs and can be done through text, phone, email and video conferencing.

How flexible is the support?

Support is meant to be just that: support. If you find that a recommended support is no longer useful, you can choose to opt out. You will not be removed from the program unless you decide to leave or do not participate at all. Every person’s supports are individualized, so you must be involved and included in the process. If a particular support is not something you’re interested in, then you and your virtual LS can find another strategy that works.

What is the VLS user expected to do?

Your success depends on your commitment to following through with your individualized action plan. At the start, you will be expected to complete some brief assessments and meet with your learning strategist regularly to determine your needs and develop your action plan. After the action plan is developed, you will connect with your LS when necessary. You may meet regularly with your LS for skills instruction, or you may only engage with your LS for occasional check-ins to see how your plan is progressing. Interactions with your LS are scheduled around your needs and can be done through text, phone, email and video conferencing.

What types of services are common?

Technical tutoring and academic support for math and reading are common services, as are specific learning strategies for study skills, test taking and time management for school. In addition, your LS provides assistance with accessing appropriate accommodations if you have a learning disability.
